Five reasons to schedule an engagement session before your wedding
If you’re planning your wedding, you may be wondering if an engagement session is really necessary. While it’s not mandatory, I highly recommend it. Engagement sessions offer much more than just a few great photos—they play a key role in creating a better overall wedding photography experience.
Below are five important reasons to schedule an engagement session before your wedding day.

1. Get comfortable in front of the camera
First and foremost, an engagement session helps you feel more comfortable being photographed. Most couples have never had professional photos taken together. As a result, it’s completely normal to feel a little awkward at first.
However, your wedding day will be one of the most photographed days of your life. So, why not have a low-pressure trial run?
In many ways, an engagement session is similar to a hair and makeup trial or a menu tasting. It gives you the chance to understand what it feels like to be photographed as a couple. More importantly, it helps you work through nerves and build confidence before the big day.
2. Learn what poses feel natural
Many couples tell me they want “natural” and “candid” photos. And I agree—that’s always the goal. However, truly natural-looking images often require a bit of guidance.
Being in front of a camera doesn’t always feel natural. Because of this, most couples need direction to look and feel their best.
During an engagement session, we can explore different poses and movements together. For example, we might go for a walk, change positions, or try different interactions. Over time, you’ll discover what feels comfortable and what doesn’t.
As a result, your wedding day portraits will feel more relaxed, efficient, and authentic.

3. Create photos for save-the-date and wedding website
In addition, engagement sessions provide fresh, professional images you can actually use. Many couples need photos for save-the-date cards, wedding websites, and other details throughout the planning process.
This is a great opportunity to create images that match your overall wedding style. For instance, you might want clean backgrounds for text overlays or meaningful locations that reflect your story.
Either way, you’ll end up with versatile images you’ll use more often than you expect.
4. Build a connection with your photographer
Another major benefit is the time you get to spend with your photographer before the wedding.
While we may have already met in person or over Zoom, the engagement session allows us to work together in a real setting. This shared experience makes a big difference.
As a result, your wedding day will feel more comfortable and familiar. Moments like getting ready, family photos, and couple’s portraits tend to go much more smoothly when we’ve already spent time together.
In fact, couples who do engagement sessions are often more excited—and more relaxed—about their wedding photography.

5. Engagement sessions are fun!
Finally, engagement sessions are simply fun.
Although many couples feel nervous at first, that feeling usually disappears quickly. In fact, most couples walk away saying they had a great time.
Even better, you can choose a location that means something to you. Whether it’s a favorite beach, a lake house, or a place you visit often, the setting becomes part of your story.
Because of that, your photos feel more personal and less like they were taken in a random location. At the same time, being in a familiar place helps you feel more at ease—which always leads to better images.
Is an engagement session worth it?
In short, yes—an engagement session is absolutely worth it.
Not only will you get beautiful photos, but you’ll also gain confidence, build a connection with your photographer, and create a smoother wedding day experience. Most importantly, you’ll enjoy the process along the way.
