House Island Maine Wedding Photos – Cristi & Zak

Cristi and Zak’s House Island Maine wedding photos were epic by all accounts. We had a super fun couple, incredible location, spectacular details and event coordination, a rockin’ band, fireworks, and an energized reception.

House Island off of the coast of Portland, Maine is a private island with two houses and a cottage, and an old 1800-era fort, Fort Scammell. Only accessible by boat, House Island also affords an incredible position in Saco Bay, and unique wedding experience. The houses are well-appointed, and the grounds are beautifully maintained. House Island is truly a gem of a venue.

Prior to Cristi and Zak’s wedding ceremony, they planned a first look at the old fort. These two fully embraced the space, and after the first look, we spent a little time doing portraits at the fort. At one point, I asked, “I wonder what’s down this pitch black, sloping corridor?” In response, Cristi simply said, “let’s find out!”, and off we went. It was awesome, and the results are some of my favorite portraits of late. It’s certainly not every day that a bride who is done up to the nines will hike up her dress and hoof it through the mud into a dark and creepy dungeon!

The wedding ceremony took place overlooking Saco Bay right at water’s edge. The planned Justice of the Peace had an emergency and could not make it, so a groomsman stood in and performed the service. It was also VERY “Maine” with the setting sun casting a warm glow. There was even a well-timed schooner that sailed by near the end.

Immediately following the ceremony, Cristi and Zak snuck away for a few minutes to be alone. They also requested that Cristi’s mom, a judge, join them to perform an “official” ceremony, which they did privately on the beach. It was a very cool moment to be a part of.

Back under the tent, the party was primed to kick off, and it certainly did so. Dances, speeches and fireworks, set the tone for a great party and an unforgettable night. I am so grateful that I was able to be there documenting it all anyway.

Below are some of my favorites from the day…

Thank you Cristi and Zak for having us along to document your day. A big thanks to my friend Chris Connor of 26 North Studio for joining for the day. Great work also by the following folks…
